Athletes will be allowed to join BBC Racing during the season only as space permits
MEMBERSHIP REQUIREMENTS:
BBC Club Membership
All BBC members must contribute their time at 2 events organized by BBC in order to receive BBC membership and BBC Racing Team benefits. These events include the Berkeley Hills Road Race, BBC/Albany Criterium, BBC Hellyer Track Promotion, the U23/Junior Rider Ride leader/support program, and any other events as determined by the BBC Board of Directors (“BBC Board”). Members volunteering for a promoter/director level position with BBC or the BBC Racing Team may work one event only. Members volunteering for non promoter/director positions must work 2 events. Members exceeding minimum volunteering for levels may be monetarily compensated with team clothing, equipment and/or cash/check at the BBC Board’s discretion.
BBC Racing Team Membership
BBC Racing Team athletes who race will be required to submit race reports and results to the berkeleybike.org webmaster in order to receive BBC Racing Team benefits.
Use and recommend to my family, friends, and the media the products and services of my sponsors. As stated in our agreement with our sponsors, “BBC Racing Team athletes are also highly aware of their promotional obligations to their sponsors, whose financial and moral support has facilitated the team members’ successes. BBC Racing Team athletes frequent their sponsors’ establishments, use their products and services, and recommend them to their friends and colleagues. BBC Racing Team athletes are devoted to promoting the best possible image for their team and its sponsors.”
Obey all traffic regulations as enforced by the California Highway Patrol, City Police, and all relevant Local Authorities while on individual or group training rides or as instructed during sanctioned races. BBC Racing Team athletes must be conscious of their role as ambassadors to the non-cycling and recreational cycling communities. Failure to abide by traffic laws, if observed by the public, can be extremely detrimental to the team’s sponsors and other cyclists and may result in the revocation of all sponsorship benefits for the entire team.
Any frames, wheels, and other equipment paid for by BBC Racing Team and furnished or loaned to athletes as a part of their sponsorship agreement remains the property of BBC Racing Team and its sponsors. Equipment must be maintained in excellent condition and must be returned on demand if an athlete should fail to uphold the standards of the BBC Racing Team as outlined above. If damages should occur to any loaned equipment as a result of a crash, negligence, or theft it is the responsibility of the athlete to replace or repair the equipment to the satisfaction of the BBC.
Any athlete who quits BBC Racing Team during the racing season for whatever reason must give written notice within 10 days of such act. He/she must return any and all equipment provided for him/her by BBC Racing Team in good condition or pay reimbursement to the satisfaction of the BBC Board. This athlete will also forfeit any and all privileges given to him/her for the remainder of the racing year, including any end of year race reimbursement (this is to include the time he/she was riding for the BBC Racing Team).
Membership Expectations:
Practice good sportsmanship and conduct myself in a professional manner at all cycling and non-cycling events where I am representing BBC. Use of foul language, unsafe riding, racing selfishly such as chasing down team members and other obvious forms of poor sportsmanship my result in suspension or expulsion.
Be prepared to the best of my ability to race competitively. BBC Racing Team members are expected to complete at least ten targeted races during the current year (exceptions will be made for injury or hardship). It is assumed that the athlete’s level of commitment is serious and training preparation adequate for a full season of racing, which is considered to extend from March through September (although early-season races begin in January).
BBC Racing Team athletes who race will be required to write race reports and results to the BBC-Race Yahoo Group list and allow publication to berkeleybike.org as soon after the event as possible.
Wear my sponsors’ and team’s clothing proudly, properly maintaining my equipment, clothing, and personal hygiene. Athletes are expected to wear the current, complete team uniform (including jersey and shorts) whenever possible in training, and without exception in all races. As valuable advertising “vehicles” for their sponsors, BBC Racing Team athletes are expected to appear with clean bicycles and clothing at races they attend throughout the year. Torn or dirty jerseys and shorts, and unclean and improperly maintained bicycles are unacceptable. Athletes who are to be interviewed and/or photographed by the media are requested to look as clean and presentable as possible, and mention their sponsors’ support during all interviews.
Attend regularly scheduled BBC Racing meetings; stay involved with what is going on with the team. This promotes communication and helps promote team unity.
Each BBC Racing Team member must serve in a team support capacity for teammates racing in other categories. This may include feeding duties, surveying the neutral pit zone to ensure team wheels are secure and visible and not forgotten, videotaping and/or photography at the event, providing a carpool, and other general support responsibilities.
Funds Disbursement:
BBC Racing Team is a small amateur bicycle racing team. In the event that we receive cash sponsorship, this money will first be used to pay athlete reimbursements (as described below), and operating costs of the team as the BBC Board may determine is appropriate in its sole discretion, including: permit fees, USA Cycling fees, NCNCA fees, uniform production, event and team promotions, and team website. In the event we do have a budget surplus, riders may request individual funds for specific championship events (i.e. nationals). The time window for such requests will be before the race season starts (this allows everyone equal opportunity to the funds at one time). The criteria for being given these funds include how long an athlete has been with the team, how the athlete has helped with the team organization, and racing ability. No funds will be made available during the season. If an athlete fails to meet these criteria, the athlete still may have the opportunity at the end of the year to be reimbursed for that race through the normal distribution of funds:
Team Benefits:
Race entry fee reimbursement
Reimbursements vary by category (see below.) Reimbursement form must be filled out and completed in order to receive race fee reimbursement. Form will be provided by current BBC Racing Team Director. IMPORTANT: Members must compete in a minimum 10 strategic and 20 total races (Criterium, Circuit, Road, Track Omnium, Cyclocross, or Mountain Bike(XC)) of the current season and as part of BBC Racing Team and in BBC Racing Team clothing, and serve in a team support capacity at a minimum of one event of the current season, in order to be eligible for the member benefits described below. If the 10 strategic and 20 total race requirements are not met, member will be responsible to reimburse BBC any race and lodging fees previously disbursed to athlete.
Reimbursements are made annually.
Races are defined as events sanction by USA Cycling, NCNCA, ATRA, NORBA, UCI or UTI, or any other events as determined by the BBC Board.

All athletes not complying with these REQUIREMENTS and EXPECTATIONS will be subject to suspension or expulsion from BBC. In the event of suspension or expulsion, athletes must return all loaned equipment to a BBC Board member, forfeit all BBC benefits and reimbursements and risk possible suspension from cycling sanctioning bodies. Any BBC Racing Team athlete found to be in a violation of any terms of the rider agreement will have their names brought before the membership at the next available BBC Club meeting. A two-thirds vote by the members present will be needed to find the athlete guilty of the alleged infraction. The BBC Board will then recommend the proper course of action; (this must be agreed by a majority vote of the present members). Expulsion or suspension notices may be given verbally or in writing. The appropriate sanctioning body must also be given written notice of any expulsion. No athlete may be reinstated after an expulsion, except by a three-fourths vote by the entire BBC membership.
