Livermore Criterium Race Report from KC (2023)

Livermore Crit Men Novice (30 Minutes) race.

I took up cycling a month before the pandemic and joined BBC in October 2021. My first BBC informal ride was with Paul C, John C, Gwen, OT, and Kevin. I couldn't keep up, and OT had to pull me out of paradise :). The help of Paul C, OT, and Alex C has been invaluable. They provided me with some excellent advice on the types of training I should do and the ones I should avoid. Unsurprisingly, it was Steve Alt's ride that inspired me to take up cycling more seriously. Thanks, Steve S!

The broken collarbone I suffered in early 2022 forced me to take it easy for a while. I got faster after that (Daniel R is right, haaaa). Paul C is right again! Limiting my weight training sessions gave me fresher legs for bike training.

I started my training plan with
Nate English in November 2022. With his help, I was able to increase speed and endurance in a short amount of time! I also took the Early Brid Training Series. A big shout out to Hussien and Dan for all their help during the Early Bird Training Series. Also, I owe a great bike fit to John at TempoEndurance.

It was a great experience to participate in the race with Brendan Hogg and Nolan Blankenau. I rode 29 miles from San Leandro to Livermore as a warm-up and my motorcycle track day skills came in handy! I was able to turn faster, but the disadvantage (I think) is that I ended up in front after the turn. Nolan thought I was trying to break away haha. I decided to go slower and stay in the back instead but I wasn't able to do that at every turn and ended up burning too much energy. Someone almost ran me off on the second-to-last turn! That slowed me down a bit and I forgot it was the last lap when everyone was pushing hard to finish.

Got a tire puncture during the race and the sealant worked!
